Not this Nemo. I’m talking about Point Nemo. It is a point which lies in the Pacific Ocean and is the farthest from land on all sides (2688 km to be exact).

the place in the ocean that is farthest from land

Its coordinates are 48°52.6′S 123°23.6′W. Nemo is a Latin word that means nobody. It is named after the fictional character Captain Nemo from Jules Verne‘s novel ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea‘. Captain Nemo, the son of an Indian king, travels the seas in his submarine Nautilus. It has officially existed since 1992.

This point piqued scientific interest in the 90’s when they heard a sound louder than a blue whale which they called ‘the bloop‘ and many thought it was a sea monster. On investigation, they found that it was an iceberg that fractured and cracked. The place is also a junkyard for spacecraft.

The Volvo Ocean Race is conducting scientific investigations there.

Not interested? You can still go to outer space all alone!!
